GLENAVON hit the ground running with a six-goal thumping of Ballymena United at The Showgrounds.

Guy Bates grabbed the first goal of the new season after just seven minutes when he ran onto a long ball through the middle to beat Dwayne Nelson despite the United 'keeper getting a hand to the ball.

Bates doubled his tally on 26 minutes when he got on the end of a long Gareth McKeown throw-in to nod home at the near post.

And it was 3-0 on the half-hour mark when a Bates free-kick into the area fell for Winkie Murphy to finish.

Glenavon added a fourth on 34 minutes with perhaps the best goal of the game. Mark Farren collected the ball with his back to goal, turned his marker and fired low and hard into the bottom corner.

The Sky Blues pulled one back a minute into the second half when Neil Lowry got on the end of a long Nelson punt forward to kill the ball and blast the ball beyond Andy Coleman.

Gary Thompson then reduced the arrears again on 65 minutes with a left-foot volley after new United signing Stephen McBride delivered the ball over from the left.

But, with seven minutes remaining, Farren effectively put the issue beyond doubt with his second of the game - a drive into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

Andy McGrory added a sixth for the visitors three minutes later with a far post header from the loose ball after Nelson had denied Bates.

Johnny Taylor completed the scoring for United on 88 minutes when he nodded home an Alan Teggart corner.
