Newry City moved above Ards and off the bottom of the table following a three-goal victory over Warren Feeney's side at The Showgrounds.

Darren Mullen's charges moved in front after 11 minutes when Mark McCabe laid the ball off from a Declan Carville header for Stephen Hughes to fire past Sam Johnston from inside the area.

McCabe then doubled Newry's advantage midway through the first half at the near post following Stefan Lavery's cross from the left after he got past Adam McAleenan.

Stephen Hughes came close again for Newry towards the end of the half only to fire wide at the left post while, for Ards, Eamon McAllister tested Andy Coleman with what was ultimately a weak effort.

Newry looked to extend their advantage early in the second half. Dale Montgomery saw a free-kick touched over by Johnston before Tiarnan Rushe's shot from the left met a similar fate.

But Rushe wasn't denied with 20 minutes remaining with the goal that killed the game off when he curled a free-kick beyond the visiting keeper into the top corner.

The home side could even afford the luxury of an unconverted spot-kick late on after Johnston did well to save a Montgomery penalty awarded for a foul on Mark Hughes.
