Two first half goals helped Warrenpoint Town defeat Newry City in the Mourne derby at The Showgrounds.

A quiet opening produced little by way of goalmouth action early on although Eamon Scannell did fire just wide of the target at the end of a 'Point break while Lee Duffy was denied by Andy Coleman.

But the deadlock was broken midway through the first half when Duffy tucked the ball into the bottom corner after embarking on arun down the right before cutting inside.

Then, on 35 minutes, Alan O'Sullivan doubled Warrenpoint's advantage when the ball fell for him just shy of the penalty spot.

After the break Ciaran O'Connor might have added a third only to send his low shot straight at Coleman, with Fra McCaffrey offering up a looping effort from the edge of the area.

At the other end Declan Carville came closest for Newry with a right foot effort which sailed just the wrong side of the target.
