Ards resisted a spirited comeback to defeat Newington in this BetMcLean League Cup tie at the Bangor Fuels Arena.
Colin Nixon's side raced into a commanding three-goal lead within the opening half-an-hour.
They moved in front as early as the third minute when Newington defender Chris McFall was ruled to have handled a Jonny Frazer cross and, from the spot-kick that followed, Michael McLellan stepped up to fire beyond Connor Archer's reach.
Then, on 22 minutes, Jonah Mitchell made it 2-0 with a close range finish after Frazer was involved again, this time pulling the ball back from the right.
And sixty seconds after that Mitchell extended Ards' lead with a well executed half volley from inside the area.
However, the Swans clawed a goal back right on the stroke of half-time when Jonathan Gowdy got his head to the ball to direct a header past Jason Mooney.
Buoyed by this, Newington came close just before the hour through Padraig Scollay but Mooney did well to make the save before, on 63 minutes, Robbie McVarnock reduced the deficit further when he got on the end of a through ball to poke a finish over the line.
But, in the end, it wasn't enough as Ards held on to progress.
