WOMEN'S PREMIERSHIP PREVIEW: 30th JUNE

The Danske Bank Women’s Premiership continues on Wednesday night with two games to conclude a busy week.

After last season’s shortened campaign due to the pandemic, this season sees a full restoration with each of the sides in the top-flight playing each other four times.

This will be the third round of games within the space of a week, with Sunday’s matches - Sion Swifts beating Linfield 6-0 and Glentoran edging out Crusaders Strikers 2-1 - adding to a busy schedule.

Glentoran’s match against Derry City has been postponed for this week, meaning that Cliftonville - who have two games in hand as things stand - can close the gap at the top to just a point if they manage to win at Sion Swifts.

Elsewhere, Linfield will be hoping to get their campaign back on track with a home game against Crusaders.

Linfield Ladies v Crusaders Strikers
Linfield could go level with the Crues in third spot if they secure a victory here but would require an unlikely five-goal triumph due to their inferior goal difference.

Amy McGivern’s goal sealed the points for Spike Hill’s side when the two teams met at Seaview earlier in the campaign, ending a run of eight straight Linfield victories in this fixture.

A title challenge may well be beyond either side this campaign but there is no shortage of talent within either side and this appears likely to be another closely-fought game.

Sion Swift Ladies v Cliftonville Ladies
Marissa Callaghan’s goal was enough to separate these two sides earlier this season in their meeting at Melvin and this contest will be equally well contested.

Sion secured their first win of the season on Sunday by defeating Linfield by a six-goal margin and they will be looking to build on this momentum under new head coach Ryan McConville.

Cliftonville suffered their first league defeat of the season at Glentoran last week - ending their 100 percent record from their opening six matches - and will close the gap at the top to the Glens to just a single point with a victory here, while the Reds would still have a game in hand.
