Then, not long after that, Kate Nicolson threatened from distance but Maddy Harvey-Clifford proved equal to the challenge.
At the other end Julie Nelson fired a free-kick just wide of the target while Cora Morgan saw an effort denied by Kate Smith.
The chances continued when, after a period of pressure later in the first half, Tara Gilmore sent the ball narrowly past an upright.
That pattern continued after the break, but the Crues almost found a way through in the closing moments when Rachel McLaren got on the end of Nelson ball forward only for Smith to save the day on the edge of the six yard box.
