HONOURS EVEN IN THE NORTH WEST AS DERRY GET OFF THE MARK

Derry City Ladies claimed their first point of the season after a battling 1-1 draw with North West rivals Sion Swifts Ladies.

A tense opening 15 minutes saw Derry's Rachel Barnaby hit the crossbar and Sion's Amy Boyle-Carr shot go wide of the post from an acute angle.

As the half progressed, Sion gained the upper hand and Derry's only relief was the occasional corner. Sion where piling on the pressure with a series of corners. With half time approaching it looked almost certain that it would remain scoreless at the break.

On 42 minutes Derry's Rachel Barnaby escaped the watch of the Sion defence and knocked the ball high and wide of Molly Meehan to open the scoring and give Derry a one-goal lead at halftime.

As the second half got underway, Sion looked determined to level the scoring.  Carr was always a threat on the left. Gemma McGuinness took over responsibilities for stopping that supply, but this just moved the action into the centre of the park.

It took a goal of equal prowess and poaching to breach the Derry Defence. Aimee Mackin was at full stretch in the box to put the finishing touch to an unstoppable Sion cross on 65 minutes.

Sion had further chances in the remaining quarter-of-an-hour but often wasted the opportunity due to a lack of control.

With ten minutes remaining the Derry defence looked jaded in the summer sun. A mix up in the Sion defence almost seen Derry steal it at the end, as Emma Doherty clipped the post.
